Losing connection

Ask the ITBYC panel

Hi boys and girls :p !
A friend of mine is constantly losing his connection after the first few minutes in the race.
His Internet connection is stable though, also his Teamspeak connection stays up.
As far as I understood, he has a network connection in his House, kind of cable, I guess.
He doesnt speak english very well, so I take the chance and ask you, if you have any general ideas, before we have to search for details.

Regards, Nick

general ideas - without more detail there's only guessing.

it's the ISP

- try over different connection. aka isdn modem, analog modem, different ISP etc.
(move computer to different location)

Its the computer

- try different game

- try different computer/setup with same connection

If it's the computer, and using gamepad joystick: get rid of powersavings, screensavers during game, aka turn off anything that does something after a few minutes.
But start with turning off anything not VSK!

I had this kind of problem with another skipper. He were disconnected when I was in the race, even if I was host or not, even if i tried to join after him... He was the only one who had this problem with me.
The problem was removed if i stop my firewall and open tcp and udp ports. But i didn't want play without firewall and my configuration seems to be good.
After, he said me that he could not host because he was not able to configure his router/firewall... lol it was maybe the problem but he never wanted to improve it.
It is maybe a network problem. Try to play with him with his and your firewall down. And after, try to open 2350 tcp/udp ports.
I hope it could help him.

Arnaud.

ok, forwarded your ideas.
Thank you so far.
We'll try to play around a bit.
Actually it looks very similiar to the problem James (Popeye) had recently. If you read this:
If you solved it, how did you solve it?

Well, this does sound similar to my problems. Unfortunately I don't have a definite answer for my problem. But my guess at the moment is a bad router between my computer and the main hookup to the internet or, and I’m starting to think most likely that the modem provided to me by my isp is faulty somehow. Trouble shooting this problem is more like narrowing down the possible faulty links. First see if you have the problem with more than one computer if one works and one does not then you know it’s not the network. If both computers fail check for viruses with the most up to date database. I had a virus during my trouble shooting that was hiding from an out of date version of my AVG, I have since up dated it and caught the virus as it returned to my system. BTW this virus possibly found me threw teamspeak. Its a bot type and searches for open ports being used by teamspeak, fortunately its a kiddy script and is only looking for passwords to your games etc, easy to get rid of and a fire wall will keep it from transmitting any data.(Look for service32.exe running in your process manager)
But back to connection problems. A website http://www.dslreports.com/ has many tools for testing your connection. Sign up for free membership and you can test your ping times and your packet loss. I have found packet loss on my modems address but not consistently.
At this point I haven’t actually changed any hardware or definitely fix anything but I seem to not have the problem any more. I will add that the only thing I’ve changed for sure since my last having the problem was to disconnect every cable and plug to both computers and reconnect everything carefully making sure there was no tension pulling on any wires (in disconnecting I had found one cat5 cable was being pulled on although it was connected to the other computer). Also I’m using a router (BEFSX41 by linksys) I was having the problem with the router not being used but during my search for answers I found that the firmware for this router was faulty and was reported to fail in much the same way as my connection was failing. So I’ve reverted my firmware back to an older more reliable version.
The way this problem shows up for me has been as if my Internet connection degrades slowly over the period of 30 seconds or so. Some apps will run longer under the faulty condition than others and some times the condition goes away before all the dependent apps timeout. You may never notice this condition if your only running a browser. In the most extreme case the modem resets itself. I have noticed this reset at times when the computers were turned off.
Keep us posted on your troubleshooting and don’t hesitate to ask any questions.
