VSK3 Slow Mode - Hitting the "Sea Anchor" button

Ask the ITBYC panel

I have been experiencing some nasty bugs lately on my home PC (my work one seems fine).

Bug 1 - Sailing along when suddenly my sails sheet completely off. And no, I didn't accidentally hit the "Sails off" key. It gives the impression that steering has been lost but that's most likely due to having no pressure in the sails. Hitting the "Sails on/off" key doesn't fix the problem, but at some point, after pressing all kinds of keys and going out to the desktop and back, I do get control back - I just don't know why. This problem is completely intermittent.

Bug 2 - Sailing along when suddenly my frame rate goes into "tango" mode. By that I mean that the game jerks to a halt every 1 to 2 seconds then proceeds again. This has been happening lately after rounding the top mark and sailing downwind. Unfortunately, the result of this is that I go very, very slowly and soon end up out the back door. Again, I have had some success at eleviating this problem by going out to the desktop and back in again but not always. Also, this problem is intermittent.

Both these bugs seem to be happening reasonably often but I can never predict when. It's a pain in the neck in public racing but it totally screws up any organised event like our WTRC :( I did have these bugs a few times in round 1 but we were lucky enough to prevail.

I wonder about my PC, graphic card and the settings I run:

Radeon 9200 64Mb with latest drivers.
PIII 1Ghz with 256Mb RAM

I have game settings on high and get about 15 fps. If I set settings lower, I get better frame rates but marks disappear and end up just being yellow circles in the water - I hit them often :( You can see other side effects of having lower quality settings here.

Don't know where to begin troubleshooting this problem :( and I am sure it will affect upcoming races which makes me wonder whether I should pull out until I find the solution. I really don't have much time for troubleshooting so I'm hoping that someone else has had the same problem and done all the hard work for me. :D

Hi!
Yes i have had the same, but not by far as often as you.
Bug 1
This has occured to me only sometimes when I´m doing 360 (without having to do 360 because of pen or anything) just to get a better timing and position towards starting line...absolutely no clue how to fix this...sorry

Bug 2
This has happend to me only when the automated disk-keeper program starts to work and/or antivirus...when I turn them off I experience no problems. One thing is different though....I havent experienced the big loss against the others as you describe...only huge lag effects every now and then with increased risk of getting/giving pen in close situations.

Sorry not much help there either...just thought i should give u some support in your misery
:)

Was about to suggest the same as Chris. Try "immediate" in the CPU/GPU synchro options (first window of the "advanced" settings if I remember correctly).

This fixed pretty much everything for me.

What is cpu/gpu synchro. What problems did it solve for you Arnaud.

As you know I have had problems over the past few weeks with what appeared to be cable connection speed. Problem has gone away (fingers crossed) but never tried fooling with this setting.
