Hosting Stuff.....help!!

I need to get this hosting situation resolved...

Hopefully there is a sober skipper out there that can help.

This is what I have..

I'm connected with wireless adaptors. Linksys on my laptop and netgear on my pc. (2 different connections, not linked or networked)

These connect to a WiFi hotspot at locations I'm at...I travel a lot.

No static IP

That's it. What do I need to do?

I only need to set up one computer.

My PC has a wireless network adaptor.

This adaptor is getting signals from WiFI hotspots. I don't have a router.

1st. Check, and check again that no local firewall is blocking incoming traffic (you need "UDP" AND "TCP" on
port 2350 (default VSK))

2nd.

You only want to run VSK on 1 Computer, that is on a LAN through an access point you do not control!
(If not correct me)

First find out if you get a public IP-nr from that Acesspoint or a private-IP. See it like this:

A) Your computer is a guest in a LAN (that access point..) that connects to the WWW through a router you do not control.

OR

B) you are a "guest" in a subdomain in the WWW connected through WIFI.

1st. Find out if you're A) or B)

If A) you have to ask the routers's admin to port forward
the port on wich you are hosting. + you have to give the public ip as your server ip in the vsk config.

if B) you should have an public IP on you local interface
it just may be that you're computer has more then one IP (Ethernet, WIFI, Modem etc) If so find out what IP you use to connect to the internet, and give that as your server IP in the VSK config.

If you can't ask the provider....

get http://www.mywanip.com/ and check if the public IP it sais you have, is the same IP as the connetion you use for the WWW (networkconnections, details)

while we're at it you are using winXP SP2?

I did the above...but it won't give me a wanip. (searching)

When I check my ip it is always: 216.126.212.200

But when I check this on my laptop I get the same ip address too. And my laptop has anothe account but connects to the same accesspoint. Since they have the same IP address I assume this is the LAN IP not the Internet IP??

I also get a remote port number when I check the IP...this is different on the 2 computers.

Does this make sense?

Had my troubles there too yesterday, seemed something broke at the operators side. Expect that to be resolved already. Can't check untill i'm at home though.

Your connection either, with lap top or desktop is always the same. Sugests you provider (access point) always gives you the same IP.

Whther it's a public IP or a LAN IP. can be checked the hard way. Check with ICAN or whoever is asigning the public IP domains. To whom the IP is asigned.

SO:

1st It's an assigned public WAN IP, if the information given describes your Provider then that should be the case.

( On a side note: some LAN privately use IP's that are assigned to the public domain, wich can cause all sorts of trouble if not handled corectly. I will assume that where you are at this is not the case)

I really don't know what it exactly means.

But assuming you DO NOT have a firewall blocking traffic AND configured VSK correctly and your laptop or desktop are on a public IP you should be able to Host. Obviously you can not.......

Since you are mobile, you maybe want to try another ISP to determine if the problem is with your current ISP.

When I try to create a race I get the "You seem to be on a network thing....make sure your NAT settings are..bla..bla..bla

Maybe I have the settings wrong on my PC?

and also to be sure what should my VSK config be in my case?

No Problem.

The "You seem to be on a Local Network, make sure your NAT ..... etc"

Sais so mutch as, that your IP publicised to the VSK sessionserver doesn't agree with the IP you have in the WWW.

If you computer has the WAN (WWW) IP (216.126.212.200)
you are supposed to offfer the VSK hosting service on that IP too.

VSK config force server adress = 'your WWW IP' (216.126.212.200)

Who, or whatever is routing your internet connection
must forward all data to the IP your computer has. Wich here seams to be the case. Also nobody may block incoming data requests to your VSK3 port. (default = 2350)

My guess is that if you set the force server adress in the VSK-configuration to your WAN IP. You may be just fine. Try it out. Notice that if your WAN IP changes, you must change the IP in the force server adress field too!

Ok...still does not work.

BUT....


Now when I logged on I get:

IP Address: 192.168.2.128
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Assigned by DHCP

Guess it changes after all.... ???

I set VSK to this IP but still get the NAT thingy....

The 192.168.2.168 is from XP's Wireless details section.

(The MYWANIP program does not work)

The 192.168.2.168 is your IP in the LAN
The 216.126.212.200 is the WAN

Where is the ROUTER?
It has to forward data for 216.126.212.200 port 2350 (default) to 192.168.2.168 port 2350 (or to your MAC adress, if your LAN IP is asigned by DHCP, as seems to be the case)





If you don't have acess to it, and it's admin won't do the forwarding .... you are stuck.

MYWANIP should be working... it does here.
