I'm about to buy a new PC with a flatscreen LCD monitor. I've heard that LCD monitors lacks in performance with 3D games.

Sailing boats does not move in the speed of light... Anyone with experience with these monitors and VSK3?
What is the minimum recommended responstime?
Is 25ms enough?

25ms is pushing it. Granted VSK3 isn't Half-life or Doom3, but I'd look for something faster, say in the 16ms range if you can find it.

Thanks,

I've searched the web in the meanwhile, and learned that 12-16ms is very good for FPS games, and up to 25 for strategic 3D games. So I was looking for something not far from 16ms...

I have my eyes on a 20" from NEC at 16ms, but also a 21" at 20ms. And a cheaper 20" from Dell, also at 16ms.

The difference between a 16ms ans a 20ms is only 4ms.I tried a 20ms and a 16 ms.I buyed a 16ms just for nearly same price.I cant saw the difference of 4ms. Head to win in the start line : we cant see the difference. :D Strategy is better .A good connection is much better, and a good cpu and video card too(first).

Unless you NEED a TFT (no space, desk to weak, in need of big income tax depreciation) get a CRT.

The thruth about these response times is that they are a farce.

Simply said

CRT ca. 3 ms
TFT ca. 15 ms should be okay for human eye but that's response from black to white (max power , crystal flips over fast) from 33% to 66% (grey to grey, only 33% power crystal flips way slower...) that could be much much worse.

TEST before you buy, take a good hard long look at video like a soccer game where the dutch (orange shirts) play with a white ball on a prestine green grassfield. If there's no tracing, slurring etc. then the monitor / tv should be okay. Aspecially orange on green should be easy to see tracing, the fast moving white ball on green grass too.

Test your favourite game too before you buy.

Looking to get Santa to bring me a lcd screen for my computer. Seems to me there was some discussion ( I think Harald was buying a new portable computer) about specs necessary to run games.

What is it I need to worry about? Seems to me there was something about refresh rate or frame rate or :p

Probably looking at least 19 inches.

Help please.

I bought this 20" LCD from viewsonic in January.

Respons time is much more than enough. No problem with 16ms at all, and would not worry about 20 something either.
Buy 21" Jake! :)
But at least 20" to get 1600x1200 resolution.

You are probably referring to response times of the panels. This is how fast the transistors can change colours. However, there is 2 definitions which make comparison difficult (black to white or grey to grey).

Anyway, you do not need to worry about it if you are playing vsk only. If you are playing first person shooters and watching videos, then a short switching time is important. However any recent monitor model will do a good job. I would go for a panel with 8ms or less.
As a personal recommendation I would go for Samsung panels, they seem to be very decent.

Other factors: contrast, viewing angle, brightness - the more the merrier. Also check that the panel doesnt "mirror" much like recent sony panels do. They may have a great picture, but every lightsource in the room mirrors terribly.

Another thing you may want to consider is getting a guarantee that every pixel works. Some shops/manufacturers offer this. The problem with TFTs is that they may have bad pixels (they just dont show the right colour - every pixel needs a transistor, with 1280*1024 = 1.3mill transistors, not all working 100%). A few bad pixels may not be enough to get a new panel unless you got a guarantee on this.

Ciao,
Herbert.

I use a 17" NEC AccuSync LCD 72v after using NEC 19" & 15" over the years. The LCD was a huge step up in quality, low weight, small desk space size compare to the old CRT's.

One of the best selling points of the LCD besides the low price now is that the screen measurement of a 17" LCD is the same size as a 19" CRT!!! Also, way better colors w/ the newer video cards.

I can hardly wait to get a 2nd LCD!!!

It rocks!!!! :D

That looks like a sweet monitor. And a 4ms response time! They are sure making progress with LCD monitors!
