If you cross the S/F line very close to the committe boat or the pin end, then it's not recognized as a valid start/finish. If it's at the start, then you get the pen start flag as if you were outside and above the line, and have to do a restart. If it's at a finish, then you are not registered as finished.
This effect is also seen at the top mark. Sometimes, if you round very close to the mark (probably also the other marks), the rounding is not accepted.
