3 vs 3 Saturday

4 protests in race 8. I did not participate, so here are the decisions:

Finishing order:
1. Arap
2. samuel
3. Balder
4. SoVa

5. jiel
6. Ilya

Red: 9
Blue: 12

Situation 1:
Samuel protest Ilya for the contact that occured 1:21 into the replay.
The VSK Umpire gave 12 to Ilya, which was cancelled.
Samuel broke rule 11. VSK calls off rule 11 too soon, this is a known bug. Base your actions to keep clear on physical overlap in the game.
No penalty points added, as Samuel took a penalty turn.

Situation 2:
SoVa and Arap protest each other for the contact that occured 4:14 into the replay.
The VSK Umpire gave 16.1 to Arap, which was cancelled.
Arap broke rule 16.1 and SoVa broke rule 11. Then who can be exonerated?
SoVa will be exonerated unless Arap is exonerated... So what about Arap?
Rule 21 says a boat that sails within the mark room she is entitled to will be exonerated if she breaks rule 16.1.
So is Arap sailing within his mark room? As long as Arap has right of way, and he has not passed the mark, then his mark-room is
- until he is at the mark, a corridor from where he is and straight to the mark
- when he is at the mark, room to round the mark
The first part means that no boats can go in the gap between him and the mark until he is at the mark, which would not initiate rule 16 for a hard change of course. This is the famous mark trap.
The second part is relevant here, and there is no longer a corridor, it's only a matter of enough room between the outside boat and the mark, and room to round the mark. Room to round means room for the stern to swing out. But the definition of room only gives the space a boat requires while manoeuvring in a seamanlike way. The hard and sudden bearing away from Arap is not seamanlike, so the space he is using is not mark room, hence he can not be exonerated for breaking rule 16.1. SoVa is exonerated for his break of rule 11, as of rule 64.1.a.
6 penalty points to blue

Situation 3:
SoVa and Arap protest each other for the contact that occured 8:29 into the replay.
The VSK Umpire gave 11 to Arap, which was cancelled.
SoVa luffs quite hard, and there is not immediate contact. Arap was therefore initially keeping clear.
Arap responds promptly and is not given room to keep clear.
SoVa broke rule 16.1. Arap is exonerated for breaking rule 11.
6 penalty points to red

Situation 4:
14:21 into the replay, Ilya completes his tack to starboard
SoVa is 0.75 boat lenght away, and immediately goes into a tack to keep clear without hailing RTT.
Jiel to windward has to avoid before Sova completes his tack, so SoVa breaks rule 13. There is also a collision.
The question is whether SoVa had time to make a RTT call or not.
The answer to that question is that she has to hail RTT never the less, and Ilya has to give the boats room and time to respond.
Since SoVa did not hail RTT she broke rule 13.
6 penalty points to red

Total score:
Red: 21
Blue: 18

1 protests in race 6. I did not participate, so here is the decision:

Finishing order:
1. Balder
2. Flowtation
3. Ilya

4. jiel
5. Arap
6. SoVa

Red: 10
Blue: 11

SoVa protest Flowtation for mast contact. 11:55 into the replay, SoVa makes a small luff, and there is immediate contact between the mast of Flowtation to windward.
Flowtation broke rule 11.
6 penalty points to red

Total score:
Red: 16
Blue: 11

But Valeriy, tactically it was not the best move to start luffing Flowtation... Your team was solid and in a definite 1 3 winning position, and you even have 4th. The only way to lose a race like that is start interfering with another boat, risking getting a penalty. Just let Flowtation finish 2nd, and you win the race.
