Hosting Limitations

Ask the ITBYC panel

I´ve a 512/128 Adsl connection using a modem directly to the phone line.

I can host 5 boats perfectly with no lag at all, but as soon as I get a 6th boat things start to get laggy.

I use win XP Sp1, P4 800 Ghz 1.7 with 256 Mb ram with a 128 mb Video Card.

Is there a way I can enhance my connection so that i can host a full fleet race just by adjusting my configuration?

I´ve seen lots of programs that say it improves your connection, but never installed one. Is there any "viagra" type program that someone could suggest?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Pedro

Hi Pedro!

Are you sure that the problem is your internet conncection? I have to computers with same connection. On one I can host with 8 boats and use TS in the background. On the other one I can just host MRs without TS.

Maybe you should try it out, but I think the problem is the computer.

Hola Pedro,
How many programs are working in the background ? ( contr/alt/del ) and close all LiveUpdate and programs who are not necessary for playing. Close msn messenger.
Check all connections and cables .Cheaper or long cables = bad connection

This site can help you to optimise your connection , and also have a forum for general connection problems.
Always y put my IP direction in : force address in vsk settings
I have adsl too and another computer in the web in same time as i am playing
For hosting, we need a very good connection if we dont want lag for the others players.

Get more RAM. It could be that six or more boats start to overwhelm your upload capacity, but I suspect a bit more RAM would improve things.

I´ve seen lots of programs that say it improves your connection

These "accelerators" are only meant for dialup connections and only improve web page load times. The only thing they'll do for games is slow them down.
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.

Agree with Keith here,
get more RAM 256 MB on Win XP won't hack it, easy check.. Is your harddisk being accessed while in a race?

For better control use a tool like cachemanXP

CachemanXP

With VSK3, trillian , teamspeak, and some other small stuff I have 465 MB utilised ............

Ok, thanks to all. I'll try all you're sugestions.

P.S. Theo, could you send me some of that RAM?

Edit:

I have 256 Mb RAM, are you saying it is not enough?

Nadeo Says:

Minimal Configuration:
Pentium II 450 Mhz - I have Pentium IV 2.8 Ghz
64 Mb RAM - I have 256 Mb RAM
DirectX 9.0 - That's the one I have
Video Card 16 Mb - I have 128 Mb
300 Mb free space - I have 10 Gb
CD reader 4x - I have 32x

Now I ask, minimal configuration for what? Installing? I don't have game settings maxed and my hardware is much superior the minimal required.

More RAM might be a solution, but I think the problem is with the connection.

Yes. 256 MB is not enough. A machine running Windows 98 might be able to get away with less memory, but Windows XP itself is a pig with less than 512MB installed. RAM is cheap, buy as much as you can, plug it in, and you will likely notice a huge speed improvement.

I just bought a 512MB stick for US$99 for a machine at work.

I (hope that I) solved my hosting problem:
Actually, I have a Quicktime Tool installed, which is launching automatically in the TaskBar.

Exiting this Tool makes me able to host for 8 skippers without any probs. With the tool, no number higher than 6 is possible.

Just a note about memory, I have 1 gig and when I run vsk it uses 450 meg for the OS, other things and VSK.
I would think more memory would still help your system run better.

Like Theo and James , i know the O's need close to 500 mb of memory for running vsk3 and TS and chat room .If you are racing and you want to see + or - zoomming, or swinging the orbit camera fastest and precision, you need more than 500mb .I have 1024mb of 400mhz, and before i had 512mb, and i can see the difference.
But add memory = no better connexion. Connexion is one thing and better play is other thing

Ok, I just bought a 512 mb stick that I will install when i get home. Now I have 768 mb. In about 3 weeks my internet connection will be upgraded to 4096/256. Let´s see how this works now.

By the way Keith, my stick costed 73 € :p . You´ve been ripped off :D

Heh heh, not me, work. Also it was memory for a Mac which tends to be $10-$20 more than PC memory. The speed of the memory will also affect the price. (LOL, my boss also ordered the wrong memory so I have a really expensive paper weight, and it's not even a good paper weight...)

However, I'll be interested to see how much of a difference you notice. A faster connection will also help. Life seems good Pedro!

Well, the machine is much faster, and I think I can max Vsk3 settings a bit more, but the lag continues. It's not very big laggy but game becomes bumpy. I think this will only be fixed when my internet account upgrades to the new speed.
